Death wasn't as bad as I had expected it to be. In my twenty-four years of life, I had barely thought about it, but the times I had were frightening. I imagined pain that would never stop and then black. But this? This was peaceful. As I lost consciousness, the world simply faded to black, kind of like a bad movie. I was vaguely aware of my lungs screaming for air. I smiled; at least, I think I smiled, and I leaned back, spreading my arms to accept my death. Small bubbles of air ecsaped my mouth and then I woke up.
I woke up in a cave, of sorts. I saw the roots from the plants about curling near the ceiling of the cave. Judging by the thickness of some of the roots, whatever plants were up there were old. I shook my head at myself, what was I thinking? I was sure I had just died by way of drowning and here I was observing roots? My mind shifted to wondering how I got down here. All sorts of scenarios ran through my head. The first was that after I passed out, I got caught in an underwatercurrent and was washed up in some sort of cave. Of course, that couldn't work, I wasn't sitting up on a beach. I was in a room. Another was that crabs surely carried me to this room, but I quickly dismissed that when I realized I had watched one too many cartoons.
The scenario I settled on was that I had been saved by mermaids, which made me wonder why they would save me. Was I to be a slave? Or was I like a caged animal in their freak show? I just knew that when I walked out of this little room I was in, I would see bars formed from coral. I grabbed my knees from despair when a man walked in. He looked like a human, but his skin was was a pale blue and his eyes a vivid green. His hair was dark orange, shifting to black in the shadows.
I gasped and crawled against the wall farthest from him, "M-M-Mermaid?"
He cocked an eyebrow, "That's a first. Usually you guys beg for your life scream profanities. Plus, if I were a Mermaid, wouldn't I be dressed in seaweed and have a tail?" He gestured at his clothes and very humanoid legs.
For the first time I realized his clothes looked like something I would wear, if I were a guy. "Well... Mermaids turn into humans when they come out of water." I clamored, struggling to hold on to some form of understanding.
"Oooooh. I see. Well, aren't you going to beg for your life back? One thing you all have in common is how you beg to be allowed one last chance at life. It's a downside for still having all your human emotions on this plane."
"My life? No! I was dying, but then you kidnapped me. Brought me here!"
Understanding crossed the man's face, "You're one of those. Some people are just so sure of their deaths. But you think you're still alive." He sat down, scooting to the middle of the room. "Let me start with my name. I'm Milonus. Call me Milo." He smiled expectantly.
"Eh... I'm, uh, Atenea."
Milo nodded and continued, "So, Atenea, you're dead. The reason you aren't bathed in golden light or whatever goes on on the next plane is because you have been chosen for one reason or another. Most humans call this a form of purgatory, but it's not the way most imagine it. Bad things can happen here, but it's not eternal suffering or we're out to get you. It's more, well, this plane is where souls are ushered forward and all the knowledge from life is stored."
"So I am being ushered forward? Are you my usher?" I scratched my head and realized I had moved closer to Milo in my interest.
"No, no. If you were being ushered forward, you would look like most imagine ghosts to look like. Mostly transparent, mouths gaping open, dead, grey eyes, all that. Really, they can be quite messy. You're here because you're special. You've been chosen for a task down here, which means some part of you was pretty extraordinary in life."
I jerked upright. "You mean I don't get a choice in this? Someone just decided that I get to live another life? No happily ever after?!" I couldn't believe how furious I was. I always thought death was the end. There shouldn't be anything wrong with it just being a step of my existence.
Milo waved his hands dismissively, "Of course you get a choice! But I would suggest waiting to see your task before saying you want to move forward. Usually, the people who are sent here enjoy their jobs. It may have been a secret passion in life, or something everybody knew you loved. Come on, follow me Atenea." Milo stood up and walked to the doorway.
I was in a rush to make a decision, but I didn't want to show it, so I stood up and dusted myself off. I kept a few paces behind Milo. I was trying to convince myself that I was on some form of underwater hallucinogen, so I might as well ride it out.
