One of the oldest breeds of domestic cat in existence, the Japanese Bobtail is the inspiration for the famous Maneki Neko statues, and is the cat who saved the man's life in the story behind the figurines. Highly intelligent, active, and social, they are one of the few breeds that actively seek out human company. They are thought to travel well (unlike many other cat breeds who resisit change of any kind), and coexist happily with children and dogs and other animals.

Like many of the short-tailed breeds, their hind legs are longer than their front legs, giving them a lynx or bobcat-like appearance. Medium in size, they are slim-bodied and come in both short and long haired varieties, and a wide range of colors and markings. Their large eyes and large, wide-set ears give them a sweet and inquisitive look that has a highly appealing effect.
