Often given the name of "weenie-dog", the Dachshund's body is usually much longer than it is tall. These dogs have short legs, and happen to be quite muscular for their lengthy size.

Dachshunds are active dogs, and can be great for living within an apartment, doing just fine without a yard. However, they have a lot of stamina, and if they have no yard, will need to be walked daily. Unfortunately, they are at big risk for spinal damage and should be discouraged from jumping. If you plan on owning a Dachshund dog you should know that they are a curious, lively, affectionate, proud, brave and amusing breed, but every dog has its own individual personality.

Originating in Germany in the early 1600's, Dachshunds were bred for the sole purpose of hunting small game animals like badgers and rabbits. They have shortened legs for following these animals right into the ground inside burrows so they might fight the prey to death.

Dachshunds are rather versatile dogs, not to mention courageous and downright loveable. Their devotion to family is fanominal, and there have even been recordings of Dachshund dogs jumping in front of mere children to save them from potentially life-taking threats.
