Animal Facts

The delicate Blue-Ringed Octopus, weighing in at just .92 oz and spanning at the most 7.8 inches, is one of the most fascinating and deadly creatures that lurk the dark depths of the ocean blue. Coming in bright and visually appealing colors and banded with around 50 to 60 blue spots, these are some of the most beautiful octopi in the sea. Harmless and even cute at first glace, fitting in the palm of your hand, the Blue-Ringed Octopus can become deadly when disturbed. Upon contact, the Blue-Ringed Octopus will activate its neon blue rings, which will begin to flash with warning. Its venom, located in the saliva and known as maculotoxin, can kill an adult human within minutes, first paralyzing its victim before their final breath. These majestic creatures should always be approached with care and caution.

Blue-Ringed Octopi generally prey on small ocean critters like crabs, fish, and mollusks. They generally live to around 2 years old. They can be found in the shallow tide pools and ocean waters in the western Pacific and the calm shores off the coast of Australia. Due to the lack of a skeleton, these octopi are extremely flexible; they make their nests and dens in mollusk shells and other small enclosures. They are most active during the cool nighttime in the ocean.
