Animal Facts

Coopworth Sheep are known for their strong disposition and fluffy lustrous fleece; soft to the touch, this type of sheep has a variety of wool styles. They are surprisingly easy to care for due to the way they keep to themselves and have a strong resistance to foot rot. Sexual dimorphism is not obviously apparent in this breed of sheep; however, rams usually weigh around 175 to 275 pounds, while ewes weigh in at around 140 to 175 pounds.

The Coopworth Sheep was originally bred to help lambing percentages by Ian Coop in New Zealand. The Coopworth breed of sheep began when Coop crossbred Romney ewes and Border Leicester rams. During the year of 1968, the Coopworth Sheep was accepted and officially recorded as a breed.
