As the name suggests, German Shepherds are descended from farm and herding dogs but was recognized as their own breed in 1899. The breed's popularity skyrocked in the 1920s due to the German Shepherd film stars Strongheart and Rin Tin Tin. Their intelligence and energy make them a great choice for service dogs, in fact the first seeing eye dogs were German Shepherds. Muscular and agile, these dogs are easily trained and love to serve. They can be fiercely protective of their home and make excellent guard dogs.

The most recognizable coloring in the tan and black, but there can be some variation from cream or red with black to all black. They are a fairly large dog, usually weighing between 65-100 lbs, with the males heavier than females. Their long muzzle and legs with upright ears can give them a wolf-like appearance, which can make some people nervous, but these dogs have an even temperament and bond well with children.
